BTMS-50

BTMS-50 is a cationic emulsifier composed primarily of Behentrimonium Methosulfate and Cetearyl Alcohol. Behentrimonium Methosulfate is a quaternary ammonium compound derived from rapeseed oil, making BTMS-50 a plant-derived ingredient. The number 50 refers to the concentration of Behentrimonium Methosulfate in the blend, which sits at approximately 50 percent, compared to the roughly 25 percent found in BTMS-25. This higher concentration gives BTMS-50 stronger emulsifying and conditioning performance, making it the preferred choice for formulations where conditioning is the primary function.

Cetearyl Alcohol, the second component, is a fatty alcohol that acts as a co-emulsifier and thickener. It contributes body and stability to the emulsion and adds a smooth, creamy texture to the finished product. Together, Behentrimonium Methosulfate and Cetearyl Alcohol form a highly effective emulsifier system that is capable of producing stable, elegant emulsions without the need for additional emulsifiers in most formulations.

What sets BTMS-50 apart from the majority of cosmetic emulsifiers is its cationic, or positively charged, nature. Most cosmetic emulsifiers are anionic or nonionic. The positive charge of BTMS-50 allows it to adsorb onto the surface of the hair shaft, which carries a natural negative charge, producing a strong conditioning effect that detangles, smooths, and improves the manageability of the hair. This property makes it the standard emulsifier choice for rinse-off and leave-in hair conditioning formulations.

BTMS-50 is the most widely used emulsifier in hair conditioner formulation for good reason. Its cationic charge gives it a dual function that no nonionic emulsifier can replicate, acting as both the emulsifier that holds the formulation together and the conditioning agent that delivers the core benefit of the product. BTMS-50 is added to the heated oil phase of an emulsion. It has a melting point of approximately 55 to 70 degrees Celsius, so both the oil and water phases should be heated to around 70 to 75 degrees Celsius before the phases are combined. Ensure BTMS-50 is fully melted and evenly distributed through the oil phase before emulsification begins.

In rinse-off hair conditioners, BTMS-50 is typically used at between 4 and 8 percent of the total formula weight. Higher concentrations produce a thicker, richer conditioner with stronger conditioning performance. Lower concentrations produce a lighter, more fluid product. In leave-in conditioners and conditioning sprays, usage levels of 2 to 4 percent are more common, where a lighter deposit on the hair is the goal.

In skin care emulsions such as body lotions and facial creams, BTMS-50 is typically used at between 3 and 6 percent. It produces stable emulsions across a wide range of oil-to-water ratios and does not require a co-emulsifier in most formulations, though the addition of a small amount of a nonionic co-emulsifier such as Polysorbate 60 can improve stability in more complex formulations.

BTMS-50 is compatible with most cosmetic ingredients but should not be combined with anionic surfactants or anionic emulsifiers in the same formulation, as the opposing charges will neutralise its conditioning effect and may destabilise the emulsion.
