What is BTMS-50

BTMS-50 is a cationic emulsifier composed primarily of Behentrimonium Methosulfate and Cetearyl Alcohol. Behentrimonium Methosulfate is a quaternary ammonium compound derived from rapeseed oil, making BTMS-50 a plant-derived ingredient. The number 50 refers to the concentration of Behentrimonium Methosulfate in the blend, which sits at approximately 50 percent, compared to the roughly 25 percent found in BTMS-25. This higher concentration gives BTMS-50 stronger emulsifying and conditioning performance, making it the preferred choice for formulations where conditioning is the primary function.

Cetearyl Alcohol, the second component, is a fatty alcohol that acts as a co-emulsifier and thickener. It contributes body and stability to the emulsion and adds a smooth, creamy texture to the finished product. Together, Behentrimonium Methosulfate and Cetearyl Alcohol form a highly effective emulsifier system that is capable of producing stable, elegant emulsions without the need for additional emulsifiers in most formulations.

What sets BTMS-50 apart from the majority of cosmetic emulsifiers is its cationic, or positively charged, nature. Most cosmetic emulsifiers are anionic or nonionic. The positive charge of BTMS-50 allows it to adsorb onto the surface of the hair shaft, which carries a natural negative charge, producing a strong conditioning effect that detangles, smooths, and improves the manageability of the hair. This property makes it the standard emulsifier choice for rinse-off and leave-in hair conditioning formulations.

Why use BTMS-50

BTMS-50 is the most widely used emulsifier in hair conditioner formulation for good reason. Its cationic charge gives it a dual function that no nonionic emulsifier can replicate, acting as both the emulsifier that holds the formulation together and the conditioning agent that delivers the core benefit of the product. For brand founders developing conditioners, hair masks, or leave-in treatments, this means BTMS-50 can carry a significant portion of the formulation's functional brief on its own, simplifying the ingredient list and the formulation process.

Its plant-derived origin is a meaningful selling point for brand founders who are positioning their products in the natural or clean beauty space. Behentrimonium Methosulfate is derived from rapeseed oil, which allows finished products to be marketed as containing plant-derived conditioning ingredients, an increasingly important consideration for consumers who read and scrutinise ingredient lists.

BTMS-50 also performs well in skin care emulsions where a light, non-greasy conditioning feel is desired. Body lotions and facial moisturisers formulated with BTMS-50 tend to have a smooth, skin-softening after-feel that consumers find appealing. For brand founders who want a single, reliable emulsifier that works across both hair care and skin care formulations, BTMS-50 is a practical and commercially sensible choice.

How to use BTMS-50

BTMS-50 is added to the heated oil phase of an emulsion. It has a melting point of approximately 55 to 70 degrees Celsius, so both the oil and water phases should be heated to around 70 to 75 degrees Celsius before the phases are combined. Ensure BTMS-50 is fully melted and evenly distributed through the oil phase before emulsification begins.

In rinse-off hair conditioners, BTMS-50 is typically used at between 4 and 8 percent of the total formula weight. Higher concentrations produce a thicker, richer conditioner with stronger conditioning performance. Lower concentrations produce a lighter, more fluid product. In leave-in conditioners and conditioning sprays, usage levels of 2 to 4 percent are more common, where a lighter deposit on the hair is the goal.

In skin care emulsions such as body lotions and facial creams, BTMS-50 is typically used at between 3 and 6 percent. It produces stable emulsions across a wide range of oil-to-water ratios and does not require a co-emulsifier in most formulations, though the addition of a small amount of a nonionic co-emulsifier such as Polysorbate 60 can improve stability in more complex formulations.

BTMS-50 is compatible with most cosmetic ingredients but should not be combined with anionic surfactants or anionic emulsifiers in the same formulation, as the opposing charges will neutralise its conditioning effect and may destabilise the emulsion.

What are the benefits of BTMS-50

BTMS-50 delivers two core benefits in a single ingredient, emulsification and conditioning, which makes it unusually efficient as a cosmetic raw material. In hair care formulations, its cationic charge allows it to bond directly to the hair shaft, depositing a conditioning layer that reduces friction between hair fibres, improving detangling, reducing breakage, and leaving the hair feeling smoother and more manageable after use. This electrostatic bonding means the conditioning effect persists even after rinsing, which is the mechanism behind the lasting softness and slip that well-formulated conditioners deliver.

In skin care formulations, BTMS-50 produces emulsions with a light, non-greasy skin feel. Body lotions and creams made with BTMS-50 tend to spread easily, absorb well, and leave the skin feeling smooth and conditioned without a heavy or occlusive after-feel. This makes it a good emulsifier choice for everyday moisturisers and body care products where consumer experience is a priority.

Its plant-derived origin and mild safety profile make it suitable for use in formulations targeting sensitive skin and sensitive scalps. It is well tolerated across a wide range of skin and hair types, and its established track record in professional and commercial cosmetic formulation gives brand founders confidence in its performance and safety at recommended usage levels.

Complementary ingredients

  • Cetyl Alcohol: A fatty alcohol that increases the thickness and stability of conditioner formulations, adding a richer, creamier texture alongside BTMS-50.
  • Glycerin: A humectant that draws moisture to the hair and skin surface, complementing the conditioning action of BTMS-50 in both rinse-off and leave-in formulations.
  • Panthenol: A conditioning agent and humectant that adds moisture retention and improves the feel of the hair shaft, working alongside BTMS-50 to enhance the overall conditioning performance of a formulation.
  • Hydrolysed Wheat Protein or Hydrolysed Silk: Film-forming proteins that deposit on the hair surface alongside BTMS-50, adding strength, shine, and a smoother surface texture to the finished formulation.
  • Argan Oil or Avocado Oil: Lightweight carrier oils that add emolliency and shine to conditioner formulations, contributing slip and nourishment to complement the conditioning deposit of BTMS-50.
  • Dimethicone: A silicone that adds slip, detangling, and shine to hair care formulations. It works well alongside BTMS-50 in rinse-off conditioners where a smooth, glossy finish is a priority.
