In cosmetic formulation, Stearic Acid is classed as a multifunctional ingredient, working across emulsification, thickening and stabilisation depending on the formula it is used in. It is oil soluble rather than water soluble, so it is added to the oil phase of a formulation, where it melts and integrates with other fats and oils before the emulsion is formed.
