Beeswax, Yellow

Yellow Beeswax, known by its INCI name Cera Flava, is a natural wax secreted by worker honeybees and used to construct the honeycomb structure of the hive. It is harvested during honey production, melted down, and filtered to remove impurities, but left unbleached and unrefined, which preserves its characteristic golden to amber colour and its warm, natural honey scent. This distinguishes it from White Beeswax, which undergoes further bleaching to produce a paler, more odour-neutral material.

Beeswax is composed primarily of esters of fatty acids and long-chain alcohols, along with hydrocarbons and free fatty acids. This complex composition gives it a high melting point, typically between 62 and 65 degrees Celsius, which is considerably higher than most vegetable butters and waxes used in cosmetic formulation. This high melting point is one of its most valuable functional properties, as it allows formulators to create products that remain firm and stable at room temperature and in warmer conditions.

In cosmetic formulation, Beeswax is classified primarily as a structuring agent and occlusive emollient. It is one of the oldest cosmetic ingredients in use and remains a staple raw material across a wide range of product categories, from lip care and balms to body butters, salves, and protective skin care formulations.

In body balms and salves, usage levels of 5 to 15 percent are more common, where the wax provides light structure without dominating the overall texture.

In solid lotion bars and body bars, Beeswax can be used at higher levels of 20 to 40 percent alongside butters and oils to produce a bar that holds its shape at room temperature but melts on contact with the skin.

Because of its high melting point, always ensure the full formulation remains above the melting point of Beeswax throughout the blending process. Pour into moulds or containers promptly once blending is complete, before the wax begins to set. Run small test batches before scaling to dial in the firmness and texture of the finished product.

Beeswax is an occlusive emollient, meaning it forms a physical barrier on the surface of the skin that slows the loss of moisture from the skin into the environment. This makes it a valuable ingredient in protective and barrier formulations, particularly for areas of the body that are exposed to drying conditions such as the lips, hands, and feet. Unlike heavier occlusive ingredients such as petrolatum, Beeswax creates a breathable film that protects without fully sealing the skin surface.
