Carnauba Wax

Carnauba Wax is a natural wax harvested from the leaves of the carnauba palm, a tree native to Brazil often referred to as the tree of life. The wax forms a protective coating on the palm's leaves and is collected, refined and processed into flakes or a fine powder for use in cosmetic formulation.

It is widely recognised as one of the hardest natural waxes available, with a melting point typically sitting between 80 and 86 degrees celsius, notably higher than beeswax or many other plant waxes. On its own, it is quite brittle, which is why formulators generally blend it with softer waxes or oils rather than using it as a sole structuring ingredient in a recipe.

Chemically, Carnauba Wax is made up mostly of esters, along with fatty acids and hydrocarbons, giving it a distinctive combination of hardness, gloss and film forming ability.
